How Hometown Church Came to Be.

What began in 1988 with a small group of young adults has grown into a church serving multiple communities across the Twin Cities. The name has changed, locations have changed, and a lot has happened along the way—but the heart has remained the same: helping people know Jesus and experience genuine community.

Our Story Through the Years
1988
Where It Began
In 1988, a small group of young adults from across the Midwest came together to start Evergreen Community Church. From the beginning, the vision wasn't simply to build one large church, but to create communities where people could know God and know one another.
1990
A New Kind of Church
By 1990, Evergreen had begun expanding into multiple locations—an uncommon approach at the time. Rather than gathering everyone in one large building, the vision was to create smaller church communities where people could build meaningful relationships and serve their neighborhoods.
2000
Putting Down Roots
As our church communities grew, we began putting down permanent roots. Starting in 2000, several campuses purchased buildings of their own, creating lasting places to gather, worship, serve, and connect with their communities.
2019
A Renewed Vision
More than 30 years after Evergreen began, we took a fresh look at who God was calling us to be. We wanted to become a church known not simply for where we gathered, but for helping people experience genuine community and share the love of Jesus with the people around them.
2020
Becoming Hometown
In 2020, Evergreen Church became Hometown Church. The new name reflected something that had always been important to us: creating a church where people can be known, build meaningful relationships, find a place to belong, and feel at home.

why hometown?

A Place That Feels Like Home

When we became Hometown Church, the name wasn't simply a new sign on the building. It described the kind of church we want to be—a place where people can know God and genuinely know one another.

Be yourself.
A place where you can be comfortable being who you are.

Be known.
A place where people know your name and your story.

Belong.
A place where you don't have to do life alone.

Find family.
A place where friendships can grow into something deeper.

Live for something bigger.
A place where you can join God in serving others.

That's what we mean by Hometown.
